David Brent: Life on the Route (stylized onscreen simply equally Life on the Road ) is a 2016 British mockumentary one-act moving-picture show written, directed, and produced by Ricky Gervais and released past Amusement One.[two] The film stars Gervais as David Brent, a character he played in the BBC television comedy series The Office,[iii] who has a moving picture crew that shadows him as he travels up and downward the country living his dream of being a rock star.[4] Gervais said, "This film delves much more into his private life than The Office ever did and we really get to peel back the layers of this boggling, ordinary man." He has emphasised that it is "not an Office film".[5]

The flick was released on xix August 2016 in the UK by Entertainment One and was a box-part bomb.[six]

Plot [edit]

Fifteen years after his appearance in the BBC2 "documentary" series The Part, David Brent is a sales rep for bathroom supply house Lavichem. His colleagues include his nemesis, Jezza, who cannot stand Brent or his jokes; still, he gets a more sympathetic response from colleague Pauline and receptionist Karen, and shares the same sense of humour as boyfriend sales rep Nigel.

Desperate to resume his music career and sign a tape deal, Brent takes a month of unpaid leave and uses money from his alimony to pay his fellow band members (Foregone Decision), his rapper friend Dom, Dan the sound engineer (whom he boldly offers double what he earns at the studio), a PR consultant, and many other costs, to adjust a bout of venues around Berkshire.

As the tour wears on, the band and crew reject to socialise with Brent (unless he pays them to practice so), and even make him drive behind the bout bus claiming in that location is no room for him. When Brent finally manages to convince a tape company rep to attend a show, they are more interested in Dom'southward rapping than Brent's music. As the costs of the bout screw out of command, sound engineer Dan comforts a down-hearted Brent, informing him that he does not need to pay people to similar him, and to stop wasting his pension money. The ring plays 1 final testify, and then genuinely join Brent for a beverage.

Brent returns to Lavichem to the delight of Pauline, Karen and Nigel, while Dom achieves a solo record deal and the balance of the band join upward with Peter Andre. Pauline asks him to take her out for a coffee and she takes his hand as they head out.

David Brent'due south characterisation [edit]

Having lost much of his status since The Part, David Brent is now the victim of workplace bullying from colleagues and dissimilar in The Role where Brent largely enjoys his working life and the condition it gives him, he is openly unhappy in his job. However, as Henry Barnes writes, "All of this relies on the audience liking, or even loving, David Brent every bit much as they once did, on giving him as many chances as Gervais has."[7]

Gervais appear that he would release the film'due south soundtrack album under Brent's recording label Juxtaposition Records.[9] He finished writing the songs for the film in November 2014.[10] [11]

Chris Martin of Coldplay, who invitee starred in Extras with Gervais, recorded music for the soundtrack together with him.[12] Andy Burrows plays the drummer for Foregone Conclusion, and wrote some original songs with Gervais.[xiii] They both have written several original songs for the movie, including "Please Don't Make Fun of the Disableds" and "Native American".[14]

On 20 October 2015, Gervais published an exclusive photo of Brent on the set of his music video shoot for his song "Lady Gypsy".[15] The soundtrack album was released together with the moving picture.

In May 2016, Gervais announced that Brent would be releasing a single in July ahead of the film release,[16] and on 8 July 2016, Gervais released Brent's single "Lady Gypsy".[17] The David Brent Songbook was released past Blink Publishing on 11 Baronial 2016 eight days before the premiere of Life on the Road.[eighteen] Included are introductions by the character, exclusive images and the tracks arranged for pianoforte, voice and guitar. Gervais said: "This book is a dream come true for Brent...Even though this is conspicuously a humour volume, the sheet music is real and the songs are insanely catchy and easy to play. Go and get the guitar."[19] Gervais revealed that the album has 15 tracks, with the vinyl edition containing ii LPs.[xx]

The film was start revealed in Baronial 2013.[26] Gervais said that he was excited to prove the world what David Brent is upwards to now.[27] Stephen Merchant, co-creator of The Office, was not involved in the film'due south production.[28]

Principal photography began in November 2015, with Gervais directing as well equally starring. Filming ran through 18 December 2015, and was shot in locations in London and Slough.[29]

Amusement 1 and BBC Films co-financed the film.[29] Amusement 1 distributed the pic in the U.k., Australia and New Zealand.[30] Open Road Films was set to distribute the film in the The states;[31] however, Netflix subsequently acquired distribution rights to the film in all territories excluding the UK, Ireland, Commonwealth of australia and New Zealand.[ii]

On xv March 2016 Gervais released the first posters of the film, both featuring Gervais as Brent.[32] The film received its start official release on 19 Baronial 2016 in the United kingdom of great britain and northern ireland.[33] On 7 April 2016, Gervais released the start teaser trailer of the moving-picture show. It showed Brent in his office interacting with his co-workers.[34]

The motion-picture show holds a Rotten Tomatoes score of 58% based on 77 reviews, with an average rating of 6/10.[35] Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned the film a score of 54 out of 100, based on 12 critics, indicating "mixed or average reviews".[36]
